Inspired by the Movement of an Exercise Ball

When it comes to true product design, there is no better way than observing the intuition of human beings. Many product designs are predicated on style and aesthetics and tend to diminish the true wants and needs of the intended user. In the realm of the office world the traditional ergonomic office chair is no exception.

Following a millennium of addressing the act of sitting, traditional chairs have a tendency to re-enact the original objective, provide a basic platform for one to rest. These days traditional chairs, and more specifically traditional office chairs compete for distinction from each other by way of introducing style and aesthetics.

Even before the headlines began to shout out the perils of sitting and the now popular phrases “sitting disease” and “sitting is the new smoking”, people were concerned about their health and the back pain arising from prolonged static sitting. Back then, these concerned individuals were taking an exercise ball to the office to introduce movement into their daily office routines, in attempt to reverse the negative effects.

Recognizing the limitations of a ball as an office chair, we assessed the situation and set out to design a chair that incorporated a similar movement opportunity.

One key missing feature of a ball as a chair is the lack of postural support. The defense of this obvious shortcoming is that the user is required to engage their core to maintain this optimal sitting posture and in turn, is suggested to be good for them by strengthening their core. While this may be true in short duration in the gym or therapy department, as intended, it is a significant challenge to assume this over-engaged position for any length of time.
Eventually these stabilizing muscles fatigue and the user collapses into a slouched position that compromises their spine alignment and much more.

Thus, the CoreChair design built on this short coming by introducing an optimized postural support interface that focused on embracing the pelvis. This support prevents slumping and promotes a balanced ascending spine. In turn, significantly reducing the incidence of back pain, as can be seen commonly throughout CoreChair reviews.

The patented mechanism of the CoreChair incorporates a pivot immediately beneath the user’s centre of balance in an attempt to allow mobilization of the joints of the hips, pelvis and spine. This active sitting mechanism introduces the movement desired to counter the effects of sedentary symptoms. The adjustable resistance also pivots well within the classic office chair base to make it safe from tipping.

Inspired by peoples’ intuitive need to move; CoreChair does it safely, comfortably and effectively.
